How to Choose Dining Room Furniture - Chairs

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

For many people, the dining room table is the most important piece of furniture in the dining room, but choosing the right dining chairs is just as important. Dining chairs should be comfortable and practical, and should fit in with the style of your dining room. They should also fit in with your dining table and any other furniture in the room.

Dining Room Furniture - Number and Size of Chairs

The first things to consider when choosing dining chairs are the number of chairs that you will need and the size of chair that your dining room can accommodate. The number of dining chairs that you will need will depend upon the number of people that you are likely to be seating, but will also depend upon the size of your dining room and the other furniture that you have in there (particularly the size of your dining table).

Make sure that you choose chairs that are wide enough for people to sit on comfortably, but that aren't so wide that there won't be enough room between them for people to move. You should also ensure that the chairs that you choose are the right height for use with your table, so that people have enough room between their legs and the table to be comfortable when they are seated. Ideally, there should be at least 12 inches (30cm) between the top of the seat and the table. It's also important to make sure that there is enough room between the back of the chair and any walls or furniture when people are sitting down.

How to Arrange Dining Room Furniture

Dining Room Furniture - Style of Chair

There are many different styles of dining chair on the market, so you should be able to find one that's perfect for your dining room. However, there are a number of factors to take into consideration when choosing a style of chair. First of all, you will need to consider how often you are going to use your chairs and whether you are going to keep them around the table when not in use. If you only use your dining chairs once or twice a year and you have a small room, you may want to stack them out of the way or move them to other rooms in the house to use as additional seating.

If this is the case, you may need to choose chairs that can be stacked or that won't look out of place elsewhere in your home. If you are intending to leave the chairs around the table when not in use, you only need to think about how they will look in your dining room and whether or not they will match the table and other furniture. Make sure that you choose a chair that is going to be comfortable and, if you choose chairs with hard seats, consider buying cushions to go with them. Decide whether you are trying to go for a casual or more formal look in your room.

Do you want modern, plastic or metal, curved chairs, for example, or more traditional, straight-backed, wooden chairs with arms? If you are thinking about buying a dining table as well, many furniture retailers sell sets of matching tables and chairs, but you may want to buy them separately for a contrasting effect. Whichever style of chair you choose, make sure that it is well-made and that it will be easy to keep clean.
